This 1959 Porsche Carrera GS Coupe (#104994) was delivered in December of 1958. It was ordered with a couple of rare factory options that included VDM wood steering wheel and Speedster body trim.  Only 19 “plain bearing” Carrera Coupes were made in 1959 and it was the only Carrera finished in the very unique, Auratium Green.

The Carrera was found in an estate with seven other vintage Porsche’s by Bob Hansen from the Pacific Northwest. When found in the late eighties, the Carrera was intact, but in need of restoration. Bob kept the car for a while without doing the restoration and finally in 1998 decided to begin the project. He sent the 4 Cam motor to renowned engine builder Bob Garretson in California for a total rebuild. Metal work was dealt with at a local Portland shop. The car was stripped to steel and all rust was removed and every panel was addressed.  Once the metal work was completed, the car was shipped to the well known craftsman at Emory Motorsports in McMinnville, Oregon. The Emory’s had the Carrera from 2000 through 2001. While they had it, they handled all the cosmetic aspects of the restoration and they reinstalled the 4 Cam motor and got the car back on the road. Once back in Bob’s hands, he put few miles on it and soon he got a call from a prominent East Coast collector looking for a great running, interesting colored Carrera for his collection.

The Carrera was used for tours on the East Coast and remained it the collection until 2008 when it was sold into another collection in California. The car sat dormant for the next four years and in January of 2012 it was offered to European Collectibles.  Understanding the rarity of the Auratium Green, “plain bearing” Carrera, the restoration staff at European Collectibles went about a thorough make-over.

The complete undercarriage was stripped to bare metal. All suspension was removed and every nut and bolt was addressed. The engine and transmission were also removed and detailed during this time. We contacted Victor Miles and he supplied us with the restored parts needed to bring the Carrera back to its original condition. Original mirrors, reflectors, headlights, turn signals and correct shine up were secured. NOS bumper guards and over rider bars were fitted front and rear and a set of correctly date coded wheels were sourced, restored and installed.

Once the exterior was returned to original specification, the car was sent to Thomas Pocius in San Diego for a complete interior in OEM materials including corduroy inserts as originally delivered. Once finished the Carrera’s engine and trunk compartment we detailed and the engine and transmission we re-installed.

As the Carrera GS sits now, it’s ready to do the Colorado Grand or the Dana Point Concours. The all NOS trim, lovely interior finish, fantastic OEM detailing and Auratium Green color really make this Carrera stand out in a crowd.
