1957 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spyder
This Giulietta Spyder has been restored and prepared for street use with several tasteful aesthetic and performance upgrades and finished in Rosso Etna over Black upholstery. The paintwork is in excellent condition with plexiglass windows, Lucas fog lights, and leather hood straps. A wooden steering wheel sits ahead of Veglia instrumentation with additional gauges for fuel pressure, oil temperature, and water temperature. Period-style alloy wheels are fitted to Avon radial tires.
This was an award-winning race car built by Fred Zimmerman of Zimmerman Autosport. It raced with the Alfa Romeo Club, SCCA, VARA, HMSA, HSR-West, and the Auto Club of Mexico, among others. The racetracks included Riverside, Palm Springs, Del Mar, California Speedway, Willow Springs, San Diego, PETCO Park, Tecate, Ensenada, La Carrera de Mexico, and San Felipe. Mr. Zimmerman competed in Mexico for two years, winning every race except one. Subsequently, the vintage racing committee recommended their transition to the 2.0L class, where they continued to secure victories in all entered events. In 2005, the Alfa competed at California Speedway, joining a mixed group of 39 vehicles from the 1.6 to 3.0 class categories. The Alfa achieved first place in its class and an overall victory!
On December 12, 2005, the entire engine was disassembled, balanced, and blueprinted. The engine has been enhanced by adding a high-volume oil pump, aluminum flywheel, hydraulic clutch, 40mm Dellorto carburetors, a high-efficiency radiator, and dual oil coolers. In addition to this, the transmission was completely rebuilt. The drive shaft has been balanced and reconstructed, and a new rear axle featuring a limited-slip differential has been installed. The braking system has been upgraded to incorporate four-wheel disc brakes complemented by oversized front calipers. The suspension is equipped with front and rear adjustable Tokiko shock absorbers. Additionally, a large-capacity 12-gallon fuel tank has been installed, along with a built-in fire suppression system. By 2017, the Alfa was purchased by its current owner and was subjected to a cosmetic refurbishment. It has since been driven sparingly and has been well-maintained.
Under the bonnet sits an upgraded naturally aspirated 1.3-liter twin-cam inline-four with Dellorto carburetors, driving the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission with a limited-slip differential and disc braking system. This appealing and desirable early Giulietta Spyder presents an excellent opportunity to enjoy an early Alfa Romeo.
